Porcelain Veneers in Shreveport, LA
Veneers are thin, tooth-colored shells that fit over the teeth to address cosmetic imperfections affecting tooth color, shape or size. One of the most commonly used cosmetic dentistry solutions, veneers are very versatile and can be used in a variety of cases to accomplish different goals.
If you want a smile you can be proud of, veneers may be the perfect solution for you. Depending on what you hope to achieve with veneers treatment, you may benefit from one veneer to cover up a single discolored, crooked or abnormally shaped tooth, or you may benefit from an entire set of veneers placed over all of your front teeth that show when smiling.
Today’s veneers are made from composite or porcelain material. Porcelain veneers are the most frequently used type of veneer. They are not only beautiful and very lifelike, but also very strong. Depending on the skill of the craftsman that creates the veneers, and how well you take care of the veneers, the restorations can last for many years.
What Can Dental Veneers Improve?
Veneers are used to cover up many types of imperfections or flaws affecting the teeth, including the following:
- Small chips or cracks
- Stains or discoloration
- Uneven tooth edges
- Abnormally shaped teeth – e.g., short or narrow teeth
- Small gaps between the front teeth
- Excessive wear
Every veneer patient has his or her own preferences and goals. Some patients wish to subtly enhance imperfect teeth while still looking natural; others want a complete makeover for a perfect “Hollywood smile.” No matter what you hope to achieve with veneers, Dr. Cunningham can make your dreams a reality.
How Are Porcelain Veneers Placed?
Usually the process to get veneers requires several dental appointments.
During the first visit, the tooth or teeth being veneered are prepared. A small portion of tooth enamel is removed to make room for the veneers. Impressions are taken of the prepared teeth and sent to the dental laboratory where the ceramic technician will create the restorations. It typically takes about one to two weeks to craft the customized veneers.
In the meantime, the prepared teeth are covered with temporary veneers. The veneers fit over the front surface and the edges of your teeth.
Once the customized veneers are ready, the second appointment takes place. The temporary veneers are removed and the permanent veneers are placed over the teeth. Any last-minute modifications can be made as needed. If the veneers fit well, look good and do not adversely affect your bite, they are bonded into place with a strong adhesive. As the final step, the veneers are polished.
How to Care for Your Porcelain Veneers
Your veneered teeth should be brushed and flossed like normal teeth. With good at-home oral hygiene habits and regular dental care visits, porcelain veneers can last 10 years or more. Because the teeth receiving the veneers are slightly reshaped to accommodate the restorations, they will always need to be covered with a veneer or another type of restoration (e.g., a crown).
